WORCESTERSHIRE v GLOUCESTERSHIRE REPORT
Worcestershire defeated Gloucestershire by five wickets at New Road to secure their first Friends Life t20 win of the season.
Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall made a lively start for Gloucestershire by putting on 27 off the first 3 overs before Jack Shantry, 2-23 off 4 overs, took two wickets in two balls when Klinger (17) got a leading edge to Gareth Andrew at short mid-wicket before Dent (0) edged behind to Ben Cox.
Despite Moeen Ali putting down a tough caught-and-bowled chance off Ian Cockbain, he got the wicket of Marshall, caught by Daryl Mitchell for 23, and when the captain caught Cockbain (8) at slip off Brett D’Oliveira the visitors were struggling on 50-4 off 9 overs.
Dan Christian and and Alex Gidman added 25 runs for the fifth wicket before Ali, 2-14 off 4 overs, found Christian’s outside edge and was caught behind by Cox for 15 and then in the next over Mitchell trapped Alex Gidman (7) lbw, with the score on 75-6.
James Fuller (3) was the next to depart after being run-out by a combination of Cox and Ali, a well-held catch on the mid-wicket boundary by Alexei Kervezee gave Mitchell his second wicket as Howell went for 10 and the captain ended up with figures of 3-21 off 4 overs when Gareth Roderick was caught at long-on by Gareth Andrew as Gloucestershire ended up on 119-9 off their 20 overs.
Worcestershire lost Tilan Samaraweera lbw first ball to Fuller, but Ali, who struck 4 fours, and Kervezee added 41 inside five overs to put the home side very much in control. However Ali was caught at deep mid-wicket by Howell off Tom Smith for 22 and when Mitchell was bowled by Chris Dent for 9 Worcestershire were 54-3 in the 6th over.
After hitting 2 fours and 1 six Andre Russell (18) was run-out by a direct hit from wicketkeeper Roderick, as he ambled back without grounding his bat, and when Andrew was caught by Dent off Smith for 2 Worcestershire had stumbled slightly to 93-5 off 11 overs.
But Kervezee, 42 not out off 32 balls, and Cox, 17 not out off 17 balls, steadied the innings by putting on an unbeaten sixth wicket partnership of 27 as Cox hit a 6 to win the match with 5 overs to spare.
