NORTHAMPTONSHIRE STEELBACKS v WORCESTERSHIRE REPORT
Worcestershire were beaten by seven wickets against the Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the Yorkshire Bank 40 match at Northampton.
Northamptonshire put the visitors into bat and the first wicket fell in the sixth over when Moeen Ali (12) tamely chipped Andrew Hall to David Willey at mid-on.
Willey then bowled Daryl Mitchell (15) in the next over and when Alexei Kervezee (4) was also bowled by Mohammad Azharullah the visitors were 40-3 in the 11th over.
Tom Fell and Tilan Samaraweera added a further 27 runs until Samaraweera (12) was run out by Hall from cover and then it became 90-5 off 23 overs when Gareth Andrew (13) was caught by Ben Duckett at deep square-leg off Matthew Spriegel.
With the visitors needing a good partnership the two 19 year-olds, Fell and Aneesh Kapil, both batted well by putting on 52 for the sixth wicket, with Fell playing some stylish shots as he went on to complete his first half-century for Worcestershire off 63 balls with a four through the covers.
But Fell’s innings ended on 55 off 71 balls, with 5 fours, when a yorker from Azharullah crashed into his stumps, and the Pakistan bowler then bowled both Ben Cox (2) and Kapil (28) to leave Worcestershire on 164-8, with 14 balls remaining.
Brett D’Oliveira (19*) and Jack Shantry (6*) then added 23 more runs as Worcestershire ended their 40 overs on 187-8.
Chasing 188, the Steelbacks lost Willey (13) in the fourth over when Shantry (1-41 off 8 overs) reacted well to catch the ball off his own bowling.
Cameron White looked threatening by scoring 24 until he was caught and bowled by Mitchell (1-32 off 5.5 overs); with the score on 62-2 in the 14th over, but Kyle Coetzer and captain Alex Wakely took the game away from the visitors with a third-wicket partnership of 121.
Coetzer completed his century off 107 balls before Wakely was out for 43 when, attempting a six off Kapil (1-20 off 2 overs) over long-on, he was caught by Chris Russell but it merely delayed the inevitable as Spriegel got a single off Mitchell to secure a comfortable win for Northamptonshire, with over 6 overs to spare, with Coetzer unbeaten on 105 off 110 balls, with 11 fours and 2 sixes.
