NORTHAMPTONSHIRE STEELBACKS v WORCESTERSHIRE REPORT
Worcestershire ended their Friends Life t20 campaign with a 37-run win against the Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Northampton.
Worcestershire won the toss and chose to bat and after Moeen Ali and Ben Cox scored 44 runs in the first six powerplay overs Cox was trapped lbw by Matthew Spriegel for 27 in the first ball of the 7th over.
Five balls later Alexei Kervezee (1) was caught and bowled by Spriegel and then the third wicket fell on 84 when Daryl Mitchell was run out for 19 from Alex Wakely’s throw at extra cover.
Ali then attacked as, after being on 32 off 34 balls, he scored 40 off the next 10 balls until he was caught at long on by Cameron White off Steven Crook for 72 off 45 balls, with 6 fours, to end a fourth wicket partnership of 55 with Ross Whiteley, who was bowled by Olly Stone for 12 in the next over to leave the visitors on 142-5 in the 16th over.
Then Stone bowled a yorker to dismiss Gareth Andrew for 19 in the penultimate over as Worcestershire ended on 182-6 off their 20 overs, with Joe Leach not out on 8 and Brett D’Oliveira unbeaten on 9.
The Steelbacks started well in their reply as Richard Levi scored 31 before he was caught by Kervezee at deep midwicket off Ali, with the score on 54 after 7 overs.
Ali then took the wicket of Coetzer, in his next over, for 23 when he was caught by Mitchell at midwicket and when Ali bowled Wakely for 17 the home side were 84-3 in the 11th over.
Then Ali went on to complete his first-ever five wicket haul in t20 cricket in the 14th over as he bowled Crook for 11 and, 3 balls later, had Spriegel stumped by Cox for 0 to end with career-best figures of 5-34 off his 4 overs.
In the 18th over D’Oliveira took the wicket of White for 30, caught by Charlie Morris, making his t20 debut, at long off and the visitors comfortably won in the end as Northamptonshire finished on 145-6 off their 20 overs.
