Moeen Ali smashed a brilliant 114 as Worcestershire defeated the Warwickshire Bears by 140 runs in the Yorkshire Bank 40 at Edgbaston.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first Ali and captain Daryl Mitchell had given Worcestershire their best start to an innings this season in the competition, with an opening stand of 104, until Mitchell, who reached his 50 off 40 balls, was bowled by Darren Maddy for 60 off 49 balls, with 7 fours and 1 six.
The runs continued to flow as Ali, who took 42 balls to get to his 50, then took a further 33 balls to reach his century, with 9 fours and 3 sixes, as, along with Alexei Kervezee, their second wicket partnership of 113 took the visitors into a strong position at 217-1 in the 29th over before Ali was stumped by Peter McKay off Jeetan Patel for 114 off just 85 balls, with 12 fours and 3 sixes.
Then Patel got the wickets of Tilan Samaraweera, caught by Will Porterfield at mid-wicket for 9, Tom Fell, trapped lbw first ball for 0 and Ross Whiteley, caught at point by Porterfield for 7 to leave the visitors on 245-5 in the 35th over.
Kervezee then went to his 50 off 56 balls before he was caught by Ateeq Javid at fine leg off Tom Milnes for 58 off 63 balls and then three wickets in four balls from Steffan Piolet, all bowled, in the final over, dismissing Brett D’Oliveira (2), Jack Shantry (4) and Graeme Cessford (0) left Worcestershire finishing on 291-8 off their 40 overs, with Ben Cox unbeaten on 24 off 14 balls.
In reply the Bears struggled early on against the pace of Cessford as he took the wickets of Porterfield, caught behind by Cox for 5, Jim Troughton, caught by Mitchell at second slip for 5 and Varun Chopra, caught by Fell at deep mid-on for 7, to reduce the home side to 19-3 in the 8th over.
44 runs later Ali took the fourth wicket to dismiss Freddie Coleman, caught at long-on by Charlie Morris for 23, and then Mitchell took the next three wickets, as Javid (18) and Maddy (14) were both bowled and Piolet (8) was caught at long-on by Whiteley, to reduce the Bears to 105-7 in the 26th over.
Despite an unbeaten 47 from Laurie Evans the home side’s resistance quickly ended as Milnes was caught by Samaraweera at short mid-wicket off Morris for 16, Patel was caught by Kervezee at deep mid-wicket off Ali for 1 and when McKay was caught by Mitchell at second slip off Cessford for 0 Warwickshire were all out for 151 off 35.5 overs as Worcestershire secured their biggest ever List A win against their local rivals.
Cessfod ended up with excellent figures of 4-24 off 7.5 overs, with good support from both Mitchell (3-35 off 8 overs) and Ali (2-31 off 8 overs).
