Match Report
The opening match in the one day season was a repeat of the final fixture last season with the visit of Sussex Sharks to New Road for the opening fixture in the new Clydesdale Bank Pro 40 competition.
Chris Whelan returned to the side after missing the last Championship match and was joined by Zimbabwe born James Cameron making his senior one day debut.
Sussex won the toss and elected to field first in front of the SKY TV cameras. At 62-1 the home side looked well placed to push on to a reasonable score. However a triple wicket maiden by James Kirtley changed the course of the match starting with Phil Jaques being adjudged LBW for 22.
Moeen Ali tried to keep the momentum going but boundaries were hard to come by against some disciplined bowling and good fielding by Sussex. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the home side reached a disappointing 144-9 in their 40 overs. Moeen top scored with 38 with James Kirtley finishing on 4-30 in his 8 overs.
In reply Sussex started strongly with Chris Nash reaching 33 in just 27 balls before being first wicket down, helped by Matt Prior with 37. Chris Whelan briefly raised the home side’s hopes with three wickets in 5 deliveries to leave Sussex on 91-5 after cruising at 77-1 at one stage.
Robin Martin-Jenkins steadied the ship and got Sussex back on track with an unbeaten innings of 35* in a 6th wicket stand with Andrew Hodd (16*) that saw Sussex home with over 16 overs to spare.
Sussex 145-5 beat Worcestershire 144-9 by 5 wickets.
