Match Report
Day 1:

Worcestershire named an unchanged from the previous match against Surrey for the visit of Glamorgan to New Road for the Championship match. In another bright April day Vikram Solanki won the toss and elected to bat first.

The morning session however did not go according to plan for the home side who slumped to 88-6 by the lunch interval. Only Moeen Ali seemed comfortable batting against the Glamorgan opening bowlers James Harris and David Harrison.

It was David Harrison who did the most damage on the home side picking up career best figures of 7-45 in 16.5 overs which helped dismiss Worcestershire for a disappointing 134 all out in 47.5 overs with only two batsmen making double figures. As in the last innings against Surrey it was Moeen Ali left unbeaten at the end, this time making 85* from 135 deliveries.

In the 14 overs until tea Worcestershire picked up 2 wickets to leave Glamorgan on 67-2 after a bold opening from Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove. When Rees was caught shortly after tea for 42 there was a brief hope for the home side but they failed to capitalise with a couple of dropped catches and edges not quite reaching the fielder.

In the evening session Jim Allenby (49*) and Ben Wright (71*) had an unbeaten 5th wicket stand of 88 which helped the visitors build an already useful 1st innings lead. Pick of the Worcestershire bowlers was Imran Arif with 1-44 who was unlucky in not picking up at least another couple of wickets.

The home side will need early wickets on the 2nd day to ensure they do not let Glamorgan take total control.

Close of Play Day 1: Worcestershire 134. Glamorgan 228-4.

Day 2:

Worcestershire bowled well in the first session of the day to help prevent Glamorgan batting them out of the match totally. Alan Richardson was in fine form with figures of 4 for 5 in 10.2 overs. Ben Wright who top scored for Glamorgan was the first wicket to fall in the 3rd over of the day for 79, followed soon after by Jim Allenby for 55.

Jack Shantry produced his career best figures of 3-48 as Glamorgan only added 39 runs to their overnight total and were dismissed for 267.

This still gave the visitors a healthy 1st innings lead of 133. In reply Worcestershire once again did not bat to their full potential, with a couple of players making starts but nobody going on to build a big innings that might have saved the match for the home side.

Once again Moeen Ali top scored with 53 and Phil Jaques and Alexei Kervezee both made 20’s. Jim Allenby and James Harris did the most damage to Worcestershire taking nine wickets between them with Harris finishing on 5-56 and Allenby 4-23. James Harris at 19 years old became the youngest player to take 100 First Class wickets for Glamorgan. The only 50+ partnership of the innings was a 3rd wicket stand of 58 between Vikram Solanki and Moeen Ali.

When Kervezee was out with the score on 160-5 the tail soon followed in just 10 overs with Worcestershire being bowled out for 171.

This gave Glamorgan the easy target of 39 to win the match which they completed with 8 overs with just the loss of one wicket to wrap up the victory within two days.

Result: Glamorgan (267 & 41-1) beat Worcestershire (134 & 171) by 9 wickets. Glamorgan 21 points. Worcestershire 3 points.
