Match Report
Worcestershire fell just short of their first limited over win of the season in a high scoring Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Glamorgan at the SWALEC stadium in Cardiff.
Glamorgan won the toss and elected to field first. Phil Jaques and Vikram Solanki opened the innings for the County and produced a good foundation for a competitive total with a 1st wicket stand of 111. Vikram was first man out, caught by Glamorgan skipper Jamie Dalryrmple off the bowling of Mark Cosgrove for 55.
Alexei Kervezee and Gareth Andrew both had brief but quick scoring innings, scoring 27 and 23 respectively.
In the last few overs Daryl Mitchell did a good job of keeping the score board ticking over with an innings of 33 in just 21 balls that contained just one non-scoring shot.
Anchoring the innings was a superb innings by Phil Jaques who scored 14th List A century. His century came up in 108 balls. Jaques was finally dismissed on the last ball of the innings for 110 helping Worcestershire to reach an impressive 256-6 in their 40 over allocation.
In reply the home side started quicker than the visitors and soon we were ahead of the required run rate thanks to an opening partnership of 82 between Jim Allenby and Mark Cosgrove, who top scored with 86
Daryl Mitchell and in particular James Cameron bowled well in the middle part of the innings to bring Worcestershire back into the match after Richard Jones had retuned for a one over spell to remove Cosgrove. However Worcestershire were unable to maintain the pressure on Glamorgan as they accelerated in the last few overs of innings.
Cameron had his career best figures of 4-44 in his 8 over allocation and Mitchell finished with figures of 0-39.
After looking in trouble at 188-5 at one stage Gareth Rees (51*) and Darren Brown (31*) produced an unbeaten 6th wicket stand of 71 in just under 7 overs, making good use of the batting power play overs with some inventive hitting, especially from Gareth Rees which meant Glamorgan reached their target with 9 balls to spare.
Glamorgan (259-5) beat Worcestershire (256-6) by 5 wickets with 9 balls to spare.
