Match Report
Worcestershire opened their 2010 Friends Provident T20 campaign in fine style with a win against Yorkshire Carnegie in a high scoring match in front of a capacity crowd at New Road.
Jack Shantry, Imran Arif and James Cameron all made their T20 debut in this match, alongside Alexei Kervezee making his domestic T20 debut after having only played international T20 matches previously for Holland. Also making his first appearance at New Road was Australian rising star Steve Smith.
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening pair of Vikram Solanki and Phil Jaques wasted no time in getting runs on the board and trying to dominate the Yorkshire bowlers and taking advantage of a short boundary on one side. By the 6th over Worcestershire were 74-2 with Solanki and Jaques both out for 30, off just 13 balls and 15 balls respectively.
The Yorkshire bowlers fought back and at one stage with the score on 105-5 Worcestershire looked they could be in trouble but a 6th wicket stand of 58 in just 5 overs between James Cameron and Steve Smith helped the home side to recover.
Cameron was left unbeaten at the end of the 20 overs on 51* off just 31 balls and was awarded the man of the match award. Steve Smith also contributed 34 off just 19 balls as Worcestershire finished on 208-7 from their 20 over allocation with Adil Rashid taking a more than respectable 3-32 from his 4 over allocation.
In contrast to the experienced batting attack the Worcestershire bowling attack contained two bowlers making their T20 debuts. The Yorkshire innings started in the same way as the Worcestershire innings, this time with Andrew Gale making a quick 25 off 15 balls. However the Worcestershire bowlers were able to keep pressure on Yorkshire with the help of some excellent fielding & catching at times, in particular by Alexei Kervezee who picked up three catches in the deep.
Gareth Andrew had a fine opening spell of 2-13 from 2 overs. In addition Steve Smith took 1-17 in 3 overs as Worcestershire ensured the required run rate was kept high. A 6th wicket stand of 65 between Adil Rashid and Anthony McGrath kept Yorkshire just about in the hunt before both being dismissed within 3 balls of each other for 34 and 39 respectively.
The last few overs were tense with Yorkshire not giving up and a unbeaten 8th wicket stand of 43 in just 3 overs right at the close got them to within 21 runs of Worcestershire with Clint McKay and Richard Pyrah both hitting 22* off 9 balls each.
Result: Worcestershire (208-7) beat Yorkshire (187-7) by 21 runs.
