Match Report
Worcestershire made one change to their side for the Twenty / 20 match against the Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Trent Bridge with the inclusion of Richard Jones in the place of Jack Shantry. The match had 5 players who had played in the recent Twenty / 20 World Cup Final, with four on the Nottinghamshire side and one for Worcestershire.
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat first against a very strong Outlaw’s bowling line up. Moeen Ali top scored for Worcestershire with a career best 67 off 48 balls. A 5th wicket stand of 64 with skipper Daryl Mitchell (34*) helped Worcestershire recover from a shaky start to finish on a probably below par 150-7 in their 20 over allocation.
Dirk Nannes took 2-24 in his 4 over allocation and Graham White 2-27. Stuart Broad and Ryan Sidebottom both picked up a wicket apiece with some accurate pace bowling making life difficult for the Worcestershire batsmen with boundaries hard to come by.
In reply Worcestershire got off to a good start picking up some early wickets but another strong batting display by Samit Patel quickly took the game away from the visitors. Worcestershire were hampered by the absence of Gareth Andrew who had to leave the field after his first over, after going for 1-6, picking up the key wicket of Alex Hales.
Richard Jones making his Twenty/20 debut recovered from a poor opening over to finish on 1-20 in his 3 overs. Steve Smith, playing his final game for Worcestershire before meeting up with the Australian touring side took 2-35 in his 4 overs.
However it was a masterful innings of 63 from Samit Patel in just 34 deliveries, containing 8 boundaries which won the game for the home side. A 4th wicket stand of 79 with David Hussey (34*) meant that Nottinghamshire kept well ahead of the required run rate and ensured the game was won just before the threatened rain came in. Hussey won the game with a huge six with the Outlaws reaching 155-4 with 23 balls to spare.
Worcestershire (150-7) lost to Nottinghamshire (155-4) by 6 wickets with 23 balls to spare.
