Match Report
Worcestershire produced a better all round performance against the Derbyshire Falcons under the flood lights at Derby but still fell just short of earning their second victory in this year’s Twenty/20 competition.
Gareth Andrew returned to the side in the place of Richard Jones. Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl first. Once again Worcestershire had to recover from the loss of early wickets. For the second match in succession Moeen Ali anchored the innings and equalled his career best score of 67 from 52 deliveries. Moeen was involved in two 40 run partnerships; a 3rd wicket stand of with Alexei Kervezee (17) and a 6th wicket stand with Jack Manuel.
Manuel provided some impetus lower down the order with an unbeaten 15* from 13 deliveries including one huge six but overall boundaries were in short supply in the Worcestershire innings on a slow pitch.
Charl Langeveldt took 2-19 and Robin Peterson 1-16 in their four over allocations, backed up by some good fielding helped restrict Worcestershire to 127-7 in their 20 over allocation.
In reply the home team started strongly with Loots Bosman and Wes Durston opening the innings and looked well on course to chase down the target with little trouble. However at the score on 53-0 Worcestershire took three quick wickets, with Moeen Ali taking two in one over to leave Derbyshire on 62-3 at the end of the 9th over. Some tight bowling by Sanath Jayasuriya and Moeen Ali kept the run rate low and kept the pressure on the Falcons and ensured the game went to the final over of the match. Garry Park (24) and Robin Peterson batted well in a 4th wicket stand of 64, after Peterson was dropped before he had scored.
Gary Park saw the home side to victory in the last over of the match with an unbeaten 41* off 40 balls. Moeen Ali rounded off a fine all round display with bowling figures of 2-14 in his four overs.
Worcestershire (127-7) lost to Derbyshire (128-4) by 6 wickets with 4 balls remaining.
