Match Report
Worcestershire fell to their heaviest ever Twenty / 20 defeat as their poor run in this year’s competition continued with the match against the Yorkshire Phoenix at Headingley Carnegie.
Richard Jones came back into the side in the place of Alan Richardson. Andrew Gale won the toss for Yorkshire and elected to bat first on a good looking pitch. Yorkshire started strongly, scoring 81 runs in the power play overs alone. Adam Lyth was the star performer for the home side with a blistering innings of 59 off just 24 balls including 10 fours and 2 sixes. Lyth completed a 2nd wicket stand of 108 with Herschelle Gibbs (40) in just 45 balls. Lyth’s half century came off just 18 deliveries as the Phoenix looked set for a huge total.
Worcestershire threatened to fight back with both Gibbs and Lyth being dismissed within 4 balls of each other as Yorkshire went from 128-1 to 134-4 in the mid point of the innings. Daryl Mitchell took 1-24 in his four over spell and Sanath Jayasuriya 1-28 as the run rate was pegged back slightly. Jonathan Bairstow was left unbeaten at the end of the innings on 49* as the Phoenix finished on 213-7 in their 20 overs, their largest ever Twenty / 20 total.
Worcestershire never looked close to chasing down the target losing wickets at regular intervals in the face of some disciplined bowling and a couple of outstanding catches on the boundary by Tino Best and Adam Lyth. Steve Patterson took 2-15 in his opening spell and Best 1-22 to get the Phoenix off to the best possible start. Daryl Mitchell top scored with 24 off 30 deliveries, however the combination of Richard Pyrah (3-12) and Azeem Rafiq (3-23) worked well to dismiss Worcestershire for a disappointing 109 in the 17th over.
Worcestershire (109) lost to Yorkshire (213-7) by 104 runs.
