Nottinghamshire vs Worcestershire: Day four report

Worcestershire were denied the chance to push for victory as rain washed out the final day of the Vitality County Championship match with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Nottinghamshire stood on 151-7 overnight – a lead of 195 – on a used pitch after an inspired spell of bowling by Nathan Smith yesterday evening.

But heavy spells of rain during the morning resulted in no play before lunch and play was eventually abandoned at 2.40pm.

For Worcestershire, there were many positives to take from the three days action that were possible.

Once again the entire team showed a great resolution and determination coupled with some excellent performances with bat and ball which followed on from last week’s draw with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Smith was the stand out performer with the New Zealander picking up seven wickets in the game, bowling with pace, aggression and accuracy, as well as scoring his maiden half century for the club.

On the batting side Rob Jones showed his class in making a composed 90 whilst Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira and Joe Leach provided superb support for Smith in a rearguard action which eventually produced three batting points.

Bowling-wise spinner Josh Baker confirmed his promise and picked up four wickets and sent down 53 overs in the game.
