england under-19s head coach jon lewis has praised the performance with the new ball of dillon pennington during the icc world cup in new zealand.
the worcestershire paceman impressed with his pace, aggression and control and played in five of england’s six matches, helping them to top their group before losing the quarter-final to australia.
academy product pennington finished with tournament figures of 38.0-1-156-6-26.00 and an economy rate of 4.10.
lewis, the former england and gloucestershire paceman told ecb.co.uk: “dillon has led the attack extremely well.
“we gave him a very simple role to go out and try and take wickets in the power-play, bowl as fast as he can and just bring energy to the team and he has certainly done that.
“he controlled the ball better and better and better through the tournament.
“i like the fact he has got a good bouncer but he controls his length well. he goes back into a good length after his bouncer very well.
“for a bowler to be able to control their length is a great asset. so i think there is a future there for dillon.
lewis, who took more than 800 first class wickets in his career, believes pennington’s county team-mate adam finch, who made three appearances in the tournament also has a bright future.
finch – another academy product at New Road – ended the tournament with overall figures of 21.0-2-82-4-20.50 and an economy rate of 3.90.
lewis said: “with adam, unfortunately he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked purely and simply because of the balance of our side, the fact we have chosen to play more all-rounders than out and out fast bowlers.
“but again he is an impressive young man, very dedicated to his craft, willing to learn, open to learning, and a guy who has a future ahead of him.
“i think worcestershire have got a lot of good fast bowlers at the moment, about five or six who are coming through.
“the future looks bright for worcestershire.”
