Abbott To Curtail Spell At New Road After Proteas Call-Up For Test Series

Abbott To Curtail Spell At New Road After Proteas Call-Up For Test Series

Worcestershire overseas player Kyle Abbott has been included in the South African squad for the forthcoming two match Test series against New Zealand.

Abbott is part of a 15 strong party for the games in Durban beginning on August 19 and then Centurion from August 27.

The 29-year-old will link up with his international team-mates after the current Specsavers County Championship clash with Kent at Canterbury.

Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes said the County would look at the possibility of signing a replacement for the latter stages of the season.

Rhodes said: "Kyle is playing his last game of his current spell with us (at Canterbury) and then will join up with the South African squad for the series against New Zealand.

"When you sign overseas players, you are always mindful that international series will subsequently be arranged and we wish Kyle all the best.

"He has been frustrated by his (foot) injury but is a quality performer."

Rhodes added: "We will look at possible options in terms of bringing in another overseas player.

"After this match at Canterbury, we have a week without any cricket and we are exploring possibilities."

Abbott has played a total of two Championship, two One-Day Cup and two T20 Blast matches during his curtailed spell at New Road.
