Ed Barnard says it is important for Worcestershire to lay solid foundations with the bat during the morning session tomorrow if they are to contemplate chasing a 399 target in the Specsavers County Championship clash with Kent at New Road.
Worcestershire will resume at 16-0 on the final day after openers Daryl Mitchell and Brett D'Oliveira safely negotiated five overs this evening.
A career best 227 from Joe Denly – the highest score by a Kent batsman against Worcestershire – enabled his side to recover from 205-6 and reach 474 all out on another sweltering hot day.
Barnard said: "Attritional cricket some might say. Obviously Denly played a terrific knock there and deserves all the credit he gets.
"He kept going in those conditions. He didn't look like at any point that he was going to give it away and in all fairness he played a brilliant knock.
"But the lads rallied hard all day. We gave 100% all the time and you would expect nothing less from our bowlers.
"I thought we bowled without luck at times. We could easily have bowled them out for a few less than we did.
"But they've got those runs now and it's up to us tomorrow now to go and chase them."
Barnard added: "The pitch has not done a lot today. There was a bit of swing early on but not a lot off the pitch really.
"It might start to go a little bit up and down tomorrow but shouldn't be anything you need to worry about too much, maybe a little bit of turn for Yasir as well but hopefully not too much.
"Is the target gettable? I think so. You've just got to play tomorrow like any other day, a solid start and see where we are at lunch and at tea.
"If we get into a position where we think we can win it, I'm sure we will push for the win. That's the sort of side we are.
"We will always try and win from any position but definitely that first hour and first session just to get a solid base is important."
