Josh Tongue and Charlie Morris struck back with the ball for Worcestershire after Ed Barnard – with support from the Worcestershire CCC middle to lower order – had brought about a partial recovery with the bat on day one of the clash with Cambridge MCCU at Fenners today.
All-rounder Barnard came to the wicket with Worcestershire 40-6 after being put into bat by the students and shared in half century stands with Ross Whiteley and Wayne Parnell.
A late flourish from Tongue lifted the total past the 200 mark.
Worcestershire, in their final warm-up game before the opening Specsavers County Championship clash against Leicestershire, were finally dismissed for 215 from 62.3 overs on the stroke of tea.
Barnard top-scored with 40 after nearly two hours of defiance and his 90 ball knock contained five fours.
New ball pairing Tongue and Morris then made their presence felt with two wickets apiece as Cambridge lost half their side for 67.
They eventually closed on 88-5 from 32 overs with Jack Keeping unbeaten on 54.
Tongue ended with 2-24 from 10 overs and Morris 2-35 from nine overs. Barnard had figures of 1-14 from seven overs. Parnell, 0-14 from six overs, was the other bowler to be used.
The Worcestershire batsmen ran into early trouble and, with 20 on the board, Tom Fell (1) was bowled by Karthik Suresh.
Fellow opener Daryl Mitchell (21) then drove at Sam Rippington and was caught at point.
Suresh struck with successive deliveries as Brett D’Oliveira (0) went for a drive and edged to first slip and Riki Wessels (0) flicked the ball off his legs into the hands of mid wicket.
Josh Dell (14) was bowled by James Park-Johnson and acting skipper Ben Cox (0) fell to Suresh after holing out to point.
Whiteley needed 30 balls to get off the mark but dominated a half century stand with Barnard. He hit Suresh for a six behind square and collected three fours in an over from Park-Johnson.
But after making 37, Whiteley attempted an on drive and the ball popped and he was caught at mid off from the bowling of Callum Guest in the final over before lunch. He added 53 with Barnard and Worcestershire went into lunch on 94-7 from 32 overs.
Barnard found another willing partner in Parnell when play resumed in the afternoon and the eighth wicket pair put on 65 before Barnard played forward defensively and gave Suresh his fifth scalp of the innings.
Parnell moved onto 35 from 71 balls with five boundaries but was run out attempting a second run by a direct hit from backward of square.
Tongue then played aggressively and his 33 not out contained eight fours.
Charlie Morris (9) gave him good support in a last wicket partnership of 33 until he was caught behind off Park-Johnson.
When Cambridge replied, Tongue quickly made a double breakthrough as Alex Moen (0) was caught at first slip by Wessels and Park-Johnson (2) was bowled.
Akil Greenidge (6) nicked Morris to Fell at first slip and the same combination accounted for Ben Seabrook (4) with Guest (5) bowled in between those two dismissals by Barnard.
