Ben Cox: Day Two Reaction Worcestershire V Lancashire At Southport

Worcestershire wicket-keeper batsman Ben Cox gave his reaction to BBC Hereford-Worcester’s Dave Bradley at the end of the second day of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Lancashire at Southport and Birkdale CC.

A fighting 40 from Cox, a half century from Wayne Parnell and good contributions from Alex Milton and Ed Barnard helped Worcestershire recover from 56-4 and set Lancashire a 314 target.

Cox said: “I think throughout the game so far, every innings it seems has been hard work for the batters. It is one of those pitches where you never feel ‘in’ and you always feel one is around the corner with your name on.

“It was a case of having to grind things out a little bit. It is not my game to do that but I had to try and play the situation and our lads did it perfectly today.

“The tempo of our innings was actually quite good throughout. We played the situations well and we got through tough scenarios and were able to cash in on a couple of loose balls at a time.

“I haven’t contributed as I would have liked this season in red ball cricket and it was nice to do that today.

“I know it is only 40 but hopefully it has helped to put us out of reach of Lancashire today.

“Wayne (Parnell) then struck the ball as clean as anyone. He is a more than handy batsman. He has got first class hundreds.

“He is a genuine all-rounder and he showed today the class he does have with the bat.”

Cox added: “Has the pitch flattened out? It is still a seamer friendly pitch. It is a typical club wicket, that is the way we described it.

“In the first innings it did it very slowly and it has dried out today and the feedback coming back is that it was nipping (about) quicker today.

“That makes it harder for the batters but that happens with the new ball, especially on this pitch.

“It is always going to be seamer-friendly at club grounds. We’ve had to really work hard to get that score on the board so hopefully tomorrow we can get the result.”
