Clarke And Cox Impress With Bat For Mcc Versus Champion County

Worcestershire duo Joe Clarke and Ben Cox made telling contributions with the bat for MCC on day one against Champion County Middlesex at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Clarke top-scored with a classy 89 in the day-night clash using pink Duke balls after hitting a half century last week for the North in the opening clash with the South in Dubai.

Keeper Cox followed on from his good form in the Emirates Airlines T20 competition on Friday by making an invaluable 40.

He and Clarke enabled MCC to rebuild after joining forces at 140-4 with a partnership of 81 in 25 overs.

Cox was eventually trapped lbw by new ball bowler Harry Podmore after striking five fours in his 72 ball knock.

Clarke reached his half century shortly afterwards off 113 balls out of 229-5 with a three off Podmore.

He found another willing ally in Lewis Gregory (36) in adding 69 for the sixth wicket.

Clarke saw the MCC total past the 300 mark but fell lbw to James Harris when a century was in sight.

He was dismissed in the first over with the second new ball which swung under the lights.

Clarke hit 11 boundaries in his 156 ball innings and MCC were eventually bowled out for 332 in 89.1 overs.

The fixture seems to bring the best out of Worcestershire players as Daryl Mitchell scored 64 for MCC versus Yorkshire two years ago.

MCC lost two early wickets today after electing to bat before skipper Alex Lees (41) and Ben Duckett (69) added 109 for the third wicket.

Middlesex reached 9-1 by the close.

The same sort of ball will be used in the first day-night Test in this country in August when England take on the West Indies at Edgbaston.
