County Just 19 Points Behind Leaders At Championship Half-Way Stage

Worcestershire have reached the half-way stage in the Specsavers County Championship – and are well in contention in the battle to gain promotion to Division Two.

Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes' side currently lie in fifth spot in the nine team table after the first eight of their 16 games.

But the important statistic is that they are only 19 points behind current leaders Essex despite the complete wash-out of the opening fixture against Kent at New Road.

Worcestershire's first innings batting display in this week's drawn encounter with Derbyshire at the 3aaa County Ground was the exception to the rule this summer.

For they have claimed 27 batting points from the seven games in which they have been able to take the field – a tally only equalled by Essex.

Like most counties, taking wickets have proved harder than last season after the introduction of the new regulations regarding the 'toss' and away sides automatically having the right to bowl first.

Pitches have generally become more batsman friendly and Worcestershire have accrued 15 bowling bonus points.

The one victory to date was claimed against Leicestershire at the Fischer County Ground although the elements denied then a probable victory against Glamorgan at the Swalec Stadium with the wash-out of the final two days.

Worcestershire will be back in Championship action in nine days time with the return fixture against Leicestershire at New Road.
