Worcestershire batsman and PCA chairman Daryl Mitchell participated in trial matches for the new ECB 100 Ball competition at Trent Bridge before heading to Chelmsford for the Specsavers County Championship match with Essex.
The competition is due to be officially launched in two years time and Mitchell has given his initial thoughts on the trial action.
He said: “The positive thing from y point of view is that it is still definitely cricket which I was a bit sceptical about.
“In terms of skill sets, it’s not very different to T20 cricket which is a good thing. The flow of the game is better than I thought it would be.
“Having ends of 10 balls is better than the original plan of having 15 six-ball overs and then a death over of 10 balls.
“The mandatory ten ball ‘death’ over sent shivers down the spines of seam bowlers!
“The option to bowl 10 balls on the bounce is a good thing. If you have a world class spinner in your team, for example, they can effectively bowl 20 out of 25 balls.
“It’s a little bit odd changing bowlers and not changing ends but we got used to it.
“The umpires need a signal or a better call for the end of a five-ball block because you don’t count to five yourself.
“The substitutions need looking at very closely if they are going to implement that.”
