County Overseas Signing Abbott Impresses For South Africa

Kyle Abbott today gave Worcestershire supporters a display of his fast bowling talent to put South Africa in control of the fourth Test against India in Delhi.

Abbott, who will be the County's overseas player during the second half of next season, finished with the excellent figures of 3-23 from 17 overs spanning four spells.

His efforts, in what was his fifth Test appearance, helped the Proteas restrict India to 231-7 from 84 overs on the opening day.

Abbott, who helped Hampshire to promotion in the County Championship in 2014, shared the new ball and bowled a lengthy opening spell of 8-3-11-0.

But it was on his return to the attack that the 28-year-old made his first breakthrough, bowling Cheteshwar Pujara (14) via an inside edge.

Abbott was restricted to three overs in that spell and when he came back into the attack for a third time he had Rohit Sharma dropped by skipper Hashim Amla at slip.

But the 28-year-old did not have to wait long for a second success as Wriddhiman Saha (1) departed in the same manner as Pujara by playing onto his stumps.

Abbott again went out of the attack after that breakthrough – a four over spell – but he returned with the second new ball and enjoyed another success.

This time Ravindra Jadeja (24) was caught at short mid wicket by Dean Elgar.

Abbott is scheduled to link up with Worcestershire in early July and remain until the end of the campaign.
