Worcestershire wicket-keeper Ben Cox skippered the Greenvale Kangaroos but a batting collapse meant he was unable to mark the occasion with a victory against Carlton in a Victorian Premier Cricket Bartercard Men's Premier Firsts Twenty20 match.
Cox won the toss and put Carlton into bat and his decision was more than justified as he was backed up by the Kangaroos bowlers and fielders who restricted their opponents to 114-7 in their 20 overs.
County paceman Jack Shantry was the pick of the Greenvale attack in bowler-friendly conditions after overnight thunderstorms.
The left armer took the new ball and finished with 1-18 from his four overs.
Shantry then took on the role of opening batsman and hit a quickfire 17 before being first out with the total on 24 in the fifth over.
But then came a collapse as the Kangaroos were dismissed for 39 in 12.4 overs with no-one putting their hand up to battle through the testing conditions.
Cox, who batted at number three, made a single before being caught at second slip. It was a rare failure with the bat for Cox who is top of the Greenvale batting averages with four half centuries this winter.
He admitted afterwards that it was "just a terrible, terrible day."
Joe Clarke's side, South Perth, were outplayed by home side Willetton but just avoided an outright defeat in a Western Australian Cricket Association first grade clash.
Willetton scored 339-5 on the opening day and came within one wicket of bowling out South Perth twice on the second day and had to settle for first innings points.
South Perth were dismissed for 111 in 42.2 overs with Clarke making eight batting at number seven and, following on, were reduced to 130-9 with Clarke dismissed for nought.
But the last pair of J. Dunning (21) and A. Penter(10) survived and South Perth ended their second innings on 161-9 from 44 overs.
Worcestershire opener Richard Oliver saw the opening day of his side Geelong City's home clash with North Geelong in Division One of the Geelong Cricket Association washed out.
England Under-19 and county all-rounder Ed Barnard's team, Queanbeyan District, suffered the same fate on the first day of their encounter away to ANU in the Australian Capital Territory first grade.
Oliver and Barnard will hope to return to action on the second day of their fixtures next weekend.
