Cox Relishes Batting Higher Up The Order For Kangaroos

Worcestershire wicket-keeper Ben Cox admits he is enjoying batting higher up the order and having the opportunity to spend a long spell in the middle after a successful start to his spell with Greenvale Kangaroos in Australia.

Cox normally bats in the number seven role at New Road and then moves up a place when Moeen Ali is on international day with England and he scored his maiden first class century against Hampshire last season.

But he is batting in the top five for the Kangaroos and has so far put together scores of 57, 93 and six in his three innings to date.

Cox said: "Obviously I'm very pleased with the start I've had here. To get back to back scores in the first two games here was pleasing.

"But the manor of those knocks couldn't have more different which is more even satisfying for me.

"The first (against Melbourne) was a quickfire 54 off 44 which was a more typical one day innings that I like to play, but then having to adjust the next week going in at 15-3 on a tricky wicket (against Hawthorn-Monash University) was the more important knock.

"I played the 'bat through' role which is very foreign for me these days as I bat lower for Worcestershire.

"But I really enjoyed playing that role again by spending time in the middle and proving to myself that I can spend a long time at the middle and play different roles for the team."

Cox, whose county colleague Jack Shantry also plays for the Kangaroos, has been impressed with the standard of cricket in the three matches to date.

He said: "The standard is good. The first game we played was against Melbourne who had Brad Hodge in their side.

"Then last Saturday, Hawthorn-Monash had a spinner that has played in the last IPL so there's some experienced cricketers out here."

*Ben will be reflecting on his first full season behind the stumps for Worcestershire and his hopes in terms of eventually playing for England later in the week on the Worcs CCC website.
