Callum Ferguson and the Sydney Thunder’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Big Bash are hanging by the slenderest of threads after going down by nine wickets to Sydney Sixers via the Duckworth Lewis Method.
Worcestershire batsman Ferguson hit 26 from 33 balls with one boundary batting at number three in the Thunder’s 128-6 in 20 overs on a two-paced pitch
It means he needs only five more runs to reach the 400 mark in the tournament.
But the Sixers made light work of their revised target of 84 from 12 overs after several rain interruptions and triumphed with nine balls to spare.
The Thunder will have to beat group leaders Hobart Hurricanes in their final match and hope the Melbourne Stars lose their final three matches.
Ferguson’s 395 runs – still the third highest tally in the 2018-2019 competition – have been accumulated at an average of 32.91 and a strike rate of 134.31.
He survived one dropped chance off spinner Steve O’Keefe on 20 with keeper Josh Phillipe unable to cling onto the swirling skier.
After adding six more runs, Ferguson went for a big hit against the same bowler and was caught at deep mid wicket.
