Matt Henry made an early breakthrough for Worcestershire on day one of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Essex at New Road.

Henry, who was making his home debut, took the new ball the New Zealand paceman struck in his second over after Essex elected to bat.

Nick Browne (15) was undone by an away swinger and was caught behind by keeper Ben Cox with 16 on the board.

It followed on from the six wickets Henry had taken on his first appearance for the County in the draw clash with Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The Essex second wicket pair of England Test captain Alastair Cook and Tom Westley dominated the remainder of a truncated morning session.

Cook was unbeaten on 36 and Westley 48 as Essex reached 105-1 from 24 overs.

Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell used five bowlers in an attempt to make further breakthroughs.

But a shower meant the players took an early lunch at 12.45.
