It was 100 years ago today, 26th July 1915, that Worcestershire CCC’s fourth first class cricketer was killed in The Great War.
Cecil Howard Palmer, 42, played for WCCC in 1904, and was a keen cricketer wherever he was stationed during his Army career.
As Lt Col. CH Palmer, of the Worcestershire Regiment, he was later attached to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, commanding the 9th Battalion.
In a time of very high casualties, only 13 days after his Battalion landed at Gallipoli, Palmer was killed by a sniper, near Hill Q, at Fusilier Bluff.
Cecil was first buried at Trolley Ravine not far from the sea shore.
Lt Col CH Palmer is commemorated on Panel 35-37 of the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
