Five wicket hero Joe Leach praised the disciplined nature of Worcestershire's bowling performance on the opening day of the LV = County Championship derby with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
The Bears were put into bat in cloudy and windy conditions and restricted to 258-8 from 96 overs – a scoring rate of 2.68 runs per over.
Leach finished with 5-68 from 24 overs but Charlie Morris – 2-78 from 24 overs – and Jack Shantry – 1-46 from 26 overs – also bowled economically.
Leach said: "The main ethos about the way we go about our bowling is to make sure we are really disciplined.
"We haven't got anyone with express pace in our attack but we try to squeeze teams to death and we did that well today.
"In terms of executing a plan of bowling economically it is probably our best day's bowling this season."
Leach, whose other five wicket haul was against Kent at Tunbridge Wells last summer, added: "We couldn't have asked for more really. We got a couple of wickets early and then it was just a long, hard slog trying to grind them down and keep taking wickets.
"We are happy with the position we are in at the end of the day.
"You have to try to keep sides in check and I thought we did that today. They never got away from us at any stage."
