Kervezee And Malik Shine As Seconds Win Opening Friendly

Kervezee And Malik Shine As Seconds Win Opening Friendly

Alexei Kervezee and Zen Malik were the main contributors with bat and ball respectively as Worcestershire Seconds launched their 2017 programme with a 104 run win over Shropshire CCC at Wrekin College.

Kervezee top-scored with 96 out of 239-9 after Seconds skipper George Rhodes elected to bat in the 50 overs a side friendly.

Then leg spinner Malik returned figures of 5-10 as the home side, who were skippered by Joe Leach's brother Steve, were bowled out for 135 in just 38.2 overs.

Kervezee featured in a third wicket stand of 107 in 20 overs with Alex Hepburn (33) after openers Rhodes and Ollie Westbury both departed with 33 on the board.

Rhodes was dismissed by Dylan Pennington who is a member of the Worcestershire CCC Academy.

Kervezee made a sedate start to his innings but gradually accelerated and faced a total of 94 balls and struck 12 fours before he was caught behind.

It was left to Ben Twohig to score some useful late order runs with an unbeaten 30 off 33 balls.

Pat Brown made a couple of early breakthroughs for the Seconds as Shropshire lost wickets at regular intervals.

They reached 74-3 but then Malik, who made three ODI appearances for England Under-19s last summer, ran through the middle and lower order.
