Kervezee Hits Half Century As Worcestershire Consolidate Position

Alexei Kervezee scored a sparkling half-century as Worcestershire reached 172-4 off 62 overs by tea on the first day of the LV = County Championship match with Hampshire at New Road.

The Dutch international had moved from his lunch score of 14 onto 63 not out from 117 balls with one six and seven fours in a rain-hit afternoon session.

Worcestershire restarted on 85-2 from 34 overs and had added just nine runs before a heavy shower drove the players from the field.

Play resumed at 2.35 and Tom Fell (19) edged David Balcombe to Hampshire skipper James Vince at second slip with the total on 99.

Ross Whiteley, one of the county's batting heroes against Durham in yesterday's NatWest T20 Blast victory, lashed spinner Danny Briggs for six over mid-wicket.

But after making 18 he was adjudged lbw to Matt Coles to leave Worcestershire on 139-4 in the 52nd over.

Kervezee reached his 50 out of 149-4 with an on drive for four – his sixth – off Briggs and the 150 came up in the 58th over.

Ben Cox (13 not out) had helped Kervezee add 33 in 10 overs through to the delayed tea interval at 4pm.

There are 33 overs left to be bowled in the final session with just one over lost to the afternoon rain.
