Leach Says Worcs Still Targeting Win Despite More Weather Woe

Joe Leach says the accent will still be on Worcestershire trying to force victory over the next two days despite rain wrecking the opening half of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Derbyshire at the 3aaa County Ground.

Only 63.1 out of 192 overs – and just 23.1 today – have been possible as Derbyshire reached 200-6 after being 111-3 overnight before play was abandoned for the day following a 5pm inspection.

Skipper Leach does not believe Worcestershire have had their "just desserts" with the ball.

But he is looking for his side to initially try and seal maximum bowling points, attempt to build a first innings lead and then have another bowl at the home side.

Leach said: "It is a bit disappointing isn't it, a lot of sitting around, and when we've got out there I think we've been very, very good to be honest and maybe not had the luck we deserved.

"But it is very frustrating to be sat in the dressing room, especially with performing so well.

"We set ourselves up to have a good first half hour-hour today and we did that (with the two wickets). I thought we were exceptional again with the ball.

"I don’t feel we got our just desserts with the ball.

"I feel we bowled quite a bit better than them being 200-6 so hopefully that will change at some point and we can knock them over really cheaply."

Leach was delighted to see Nathan Lyon claim his first Championship wicket for the County, trapping Alex Hughes (53) lbw immediately before the players left the field for the final time.

He said: "It was good for Nathan to get his first wicket. I thought he was brilliant last night. He bowled very well again today so it was a good reward for him to get off the mark.

"Hopefully he will have a bigger part to play in the rest of this game."

As regards the next two days, Leach said: "First and foremost we need to bowl them out, make sure we get our bowling points and then we will see.

"We will try and lay a foundation with the bat and then hopefully push on past them and have another go at them.

"We want to play positive and attacking cricket and try and win the game so we will try and do that the best we can and see where that takes us."
