Leach To Skipper Seconds In Four-Day Clash With Middlesex At New Road

All-rounder Joe Leach will revert to captaining the Worcestershire second eleven in the four-day friendly with Middlesex at New Road starting tomorrow (11am).

Leach had a spell captaining the Seconds during the early part of last season before becoming part of the senior side for the remainder of the campaign.

He has been in the squad for the opening two LV = County Championship matches with Yorkshire and Sussex.

The Seconds squad to face Middlesex contains Ross Whiteley, Brett D'Oliveira, Joe Clarke, Ed Barnard and Chris Russell who all featured in the county's pre-season games in Abu Dhabi and this country.

Slow left armer Jonathan Dilley, the son of former Worcestershire and England paceman Graham Dilley, and batsman Adam Hose are also included.

Dilley, 20, played three games for Gloucestershire Seconds last season while Hose, 22, featured for the MCC Young Cricketers in 2014 but scored 52 and 30 for Hampshire Seconds against Worcestershire Seconds at New Road in September.

England Under-19 player Barnard will look to press his claims for a first team spot by doing as well as he can for the Seconds in what is his first season as a fully fledged professional.

He said: "That's the biggest place you can push now with all the pre-season games having gone. "If you look at our second team now, it is going to be very strong.

"If you look at the competition for places, there are going to be people who will miss out on a spot.

"It will make our second team very strong which is exciting really for the season coming. You've just to try and do as well as you can."

It is the second time that the Seconds have been in action at the county's headquarters this season. They had previously been involved in a drawn two game with Somerset.

Worcestershire will take on local rivals Warwickshire in another four-day friendly at Barnt Green from May 5 to 8.

They will launch their Second Eleven Championship programme against Northamptonshire at Milton Keynes from May 12 to 14.

Worcestershire defeated Middlesex at Radlett in a three-day second team friendly last August.
