Lion King Outdoor Cinema Event Creates Phenomenal Interest

Lion King Outdoor Cinema Event Creates Phenomenal Interest

There has been phenomenal interest in Worcestershire CCC's first outdoor cinema event of the summer – 'The Lion King' – since it was announced on Friday.

The June 25 screening at New Road on the big screen has been an endless topic of conversation on Facebook during the weekend and now beyond.

Around 1,500 people have indicated via Facebook that they will be attending – and a "significant portion" have already snapped up tickets.

It follows on from the success of last summer's outdoor cinema screening of 'Frozen'.

A family ticket for two adults and two children bought in advance costs just £25 for the perfect Saturday summer afternoon's entertainment.

Worcestershire Commercial Director Jon Graham said: "The interest in the Lion King has just exploded on Facebook. It is absolutely mind-blowing the numbers.

"We've got 1,500 people saying they are going to come and a significant portion of those people have already bought a ticket.

"We are a good four months away and ticket sales have just been outstanding and a bit of a shock to be honest.

"On Facebook it is probably the most talked about event that we have ever done here, full stop.

"It is sort of rivalling the Birmingham Bears game in the T20 and I guess the message is 'if you want to come, get in quick'. We always felt it was the right movie.

"We want more things like that and hopefully we will have another outdoor cinema event in August."

Graham added: "With 'Frozen' we were still finding our feet a little bit last year, to make sure the screen worked, the audio was right and it was very much a test in the water.

"I went with my family and it was absolutely brilliant and I was convinced as soon as we announced the film for this summer that everyone who came last year would come again.

"Last year was the yardstick just to make sure that when people come, they know what to expect the following year."

Graham says Worcestershire are determined to try and attract as many new people to New Road as possible.

He said: "There are so many different objectives as to why we do it (the outdoor cinema event).

"First and foremost, we want to try and get as many new people to the club as we can, whether it be an outdoor cinema event, a concert, a wedding.

"The more people who know we are here and what we can offer, then that is really going to help us going forward.

"With the outdoor cinema events, why wouldn't you want to come? It is a fantastic location, the parking is good, we will have the Chestnut Marquee open and, the way things are going, we will probably have the Graeme Hick Pavilion open as well.

"It is a different type of event to popping up the local multiplex and watching a film there. It's a completely different set-up.

"The film is at 2pm but we will open at 12 noon so people can come and get their spot but again the way things are going, you probably need to get here early and get your position and get your picnic blanket down."
