Mason: Barnard To Have “real Scope” To Bowl Quicker After Winter Fitness Work

Matt Mason believes Worcestershire all-rounder Ed Barnard is capable of bowling quicker and that he will reap the benefits of working with strengthening and conditioning coach Ross Dewar this winter.

Barnard has stayed in England rather than returning to Australia for a second successive year to play grade cricket.

The former England Under-19 player showed plenty of promise, particularly with the ball, after making his first senior appearances last summer and played in all of the County's white ball cricket.

Assistant coach and bowling coach Mason said: "I think there is real scope for Ed Barnard to bowl quicker than he does.

"A lot of that is going to come through the work he does with Ross Dewar in the gym, strengthening and conditioning work.

"Technically he is pretty sound. He is a highly skilled bowled and I think he may have perhaps played even more Championship matches than he did.

"Certainly going forward we'd like to get him in that side because he bats very nicely too. He has got a great cricket brain.

"So if we can just pick him up a yard of pace with the skill he has got, he is going to be a real handful.

"That will be an ongoing thing over a couple of seasons. He might start to fill out and put on some good pace."
