worcestershire cricket society’s 2018-2019 winter programme comes to an end this evening (tuesday) with nottinghamshire director of cricket, mick newell, the guest speaker in the hick pavilion.
the 54-year-old has a relationship with nottinghamshire stretching into a fourth decade as player and on the coaching side and is one of the most respected figures in the game.
he played first class cricket for the county between 1984 and 1992 and passed 1,000 runs in their 1987 county championship title-winning campaign.
after ending his first class career mick had a spell as second team captain-manager and, following the departure of clive rice, took the helm in 2002 with nottinghamshire.
an instant promotion to division one in the county championship led to the position becoming permanent, and he has held the position of director of cricket ever since.
as well as leading nottinghamshire to county championship titles in 2005 and 2010, mick has regularly navigated them to the knockout stages in both t20 and one-day cricket, a run of success that culminated in notts outlaws’ yorkshire bank 40 trophy win in 2013.
after the 2016 domestic campaign, mick handed over the responsibility of the nottinghamshire first team to former worcestershire wicket-keeper, peter moores, leaving him free to focus on the club’s overall development and recruiting programme.
he also combined his duties at trent bridge for several years with those of being an england selector.
