Mitchell Backs Moeen To Make Impact At Test Level For England

Mitchell Backs Moeen To Make Impact At Test Level For England

Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell is backing Moeen Ali to reproduce the form he has shown in the limited overs form of the game for England at Test level.

Moeen is in the squad chosen for Thursday's opening Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's as an all-rounder.

He scored 44, 10 and 55 in three ODIs against the West Indies in addition to playing in the ICC World T20 in Bangladesh.

Mitchell said: "Moeen has been brilliant for Worcestershire for the last couple of years and his call-up to the England Test squad is well deserved.

"He has shown he is capable of playing at the highest level in one-day internationals and I am sure he will be able to translate that form to Test matches as well.

"It will be interesting to see where England play him in the side. I'm sure if you asked Moeen, he would want to bat at number three like he does for Worcestershire.

"But you have to earn your stripes in the England side and there are probably other players ahead of him in the top three."

Mitchell added: "Moeen has always had an abundance of talent but over the last three or four years I have really seen a shift in his attitude in terms of his fitness, bowling and fielding.

"He really put the hard yards in the gym and is a very good role model for everyone in our squad."
