Moeen Ali earned an instant recall to the England side for the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada but failed to pick up a wicket on the opening day.
He bowled 12 overs for 45 runs in five separate spells of 1-0-8-0, 3-0-7-0, 4-1-12-0, 3-0-14-0 and 1-0-4-0 as the Windies reached 188-5 on a truncated day.
Marlon Samuels survived a review against Moeen.
Replays showed the ball clipping the top of leg stump but Samuels remained as the umpires call had originally been not out.
The Worcestershire all-rounder missed the opening Test in Antigua in which the home side batted throughout the final four sessions to earn a draw.
But Moeen has recovered from the side strain suffered when bowling during the World Cup and replaced James Tredwell in the only change to the England side.
Moeen proved his fitness when he played in Worcestershire's opening LV = County Championship clash with Yorkshire at New Road last week.
He scored 62 and four and bowled a total of 11 overs in the game.
Moeen had been put through his paces in the nets during the last two days by England after flying out to the Caribbean
Tredwell had picked up four wickets in the Windies first innings but was less effective during their second knock when he added only one more wicket.
Moeen made his Test debut against Sri Lanka 11 months ago and had played in all seven Tests – two versus Sri Lanka and five against India – before sustaining the injury against Bangladesh on March 9.
It was in the Windies that he made his England debut 14 months ago in the ODI series.
