New Road Players Past And Present Unite To Praise And Honour Hughes

Worcestershire players past and present have taken to social networking to express their sadness at the death of former New Road team-mate Phil Hughes.

Hughes, who played for Worcestershire during the 2012 season, has passed away at the age of 25 after being hit on the head by a delivery at the Sydney Cricket Ground two days ago.

England centurion and Worcestershire batsman Moeen Ali wrote: "Really sad day. Gutted to hear the news about such a great guy in Phil Hughes. Thoughts with his family and friends. Will be missed."

Assistant coach-bowling coach, fellow Australian and ex seamer Matt Mason wrote: "Our club has lost another great player and true friend. You will always be remembered as a Worcestershire lad by us all. RIP mate."

Paceman Jack Shantry wrote: "Hasn't sunk in, won't for a while. Was a pleasure to have played with and known Phil. Thoughts with his family."

All-rounder Joe Leach wrote: "Thoughts obviously with family. Hopefully they can take some comfort in the amount of love being shown Phil."

Ex county new ball bowler Alan Richardson wrote: "Can't get my head around what I've woken up to. An absolute legend and will be sorely missed. Honoured to call Phil a team-mate."
