CB40 v Sussex Sharks
With the Twenty / 20 competition over for the season the ECB 40 over competition restarted with a visit to Hove to play the Sussex Sharks at Hove in a flood lit match in front of the SKY cameras. In the absence of an overseas player Worcestershire went into the match with the same side that played in the last Twenty / 20 match. Sussex won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sussex made a solid start with a 1st wicket partnership of 76 within 12 overs. Chris Nash was the wicket to fall, being caught at the wicket by Ben Cox off the bowling of Gareth Andrew for 27. Ed Joyce was in fine form in the match. Joyce top scored with 117 in just 91 deliveries.

Joyce completed a 2nd wicket stand of 119 with Luke Wright which set Sussex up to reach a very high score. Joyce was eventually caught by Imran Arif off the bowling of James Cameron. During the partnership Wright was the quiet partner but soon accelerated after the dismissal of Joyce. Wright looked well set to complete a century himself before being well caught by Jack Manuel off the bowling of Jack Shantry for 95 off 76 deliveries.

It was a tough session for the Worcestershire bowlers with the Sussex batsmen in fine form. Jack Shantry took 3-54 in his 8 over spell was the pick of the bowlers. Worcestershire did take a flurry of wickets in the batting power play but Sussex were still able to post a huge score of 313-6, helped by 51 runs being added in the final 5 overs by Ben Brown (23*) and Robin Martin-Jenkins (18*).

In reply Worcestershire started well in the first four overs but a double strike by James Kirtley quickly extinguished any realistic chance of Worcestershire chasing down such a large target. Jack Manuel (22) and Vikram Solanki (21) were both dismissed with the score on 44 by Kirtley who took 3-23 in his opening spell.

Sussex made use of all their one day experience to totally dominate the Worcestershire batsmen with both the ball and with some excellent ground fielding which led to two run-outs. Monty Panesar underlined his class with a superb spell of spin bowling with a spell of 2-11 in his 8 over spell including 2 maidens.

With the score on 95-8 within 18 overs the result was not in any doubt but the Worcestershire lower order provided a bit of resistance. Shaaiq Choudhry top scored with 39 off 49 deliveries and completed a 9th wicket stand of 36 with Imran Arif who himself was unbeaten at the end of the innings on 5* after facing 41 deliveries. Last man out was Jack Shantry for 18 as Worcestershire were dismissed for 154 with 7 overs left.

Worcestershire (154) lost to Sussex (313-6) by 154 runs.
