LV=CC v Derbyshire at Derby, Day 1 |
|
Shakib Al Hasan made his Worcestershire debut in the Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby. Also returning after being rested for the Twenty / 20 competition were Alan Richardson and Matt Mason. Dave Wheeldon also made his first Championship appearance of the season, coming in to open the innings with Daryl Mitchell. Vikram Solanki won the toss for Worcestershire and elected to bat first in light overcast conditions at the start of the match.
With the pitch perhaps a little fresh after being exposed to the rain in the previous night’s floodlit match batting conditions were not easy with the Derbyshire bowlers exploiting the conditions in the first session of the match which allowed both seam and swing movement. By lunch Worcestershire were on 57-3 after 30 overs, with Dave Wheeldon unbeaten on 12 after a cautious innings, where runs were hard to come by but did a good job in protecting his wicket even though the ball beat the bat on a few occasions.
After lunch batting conditions eased as the pitch dried totally and the sun came out. When Wheeldon was out for 20 after an innings lasting 127 balls the score was on 106-5 and the visitors looked in trouble. However a 6th wicket stand between Shakib Al Hasan and James Cameron of 101 helped to rescue the visitors. Al Hasan looked in good touch in a fine innings of 90 in 82 deliveries, containing 16 boundaries until he was caught at the wicket off the bowling of Greg Smith just before tea. Al Hasan and Cameron worked well in combination and soon upped the run rate.
After tea James Cameron carried on where he left off but had to be a bit more cautious when batting with the lower order. Cameron eventually ran out of partners as he was last man out for a career best of 89 after an innings lasting 114 deliveries to help Worcestershire reach 279 all out. Tim Groenewald took 3-65 in 15 overs and Greg Smith 2-33 in 18 overs for the home side.
This left 11 overs to be bowled in the day by which time Derbyshire reached 43-0.
Close of play Day 1: Worcestershire (279) lead Derbyshire (43-0) by 236 runs.
