Match Report: CB40 v Unicorns at Kidderminster

Shakib Al-Hasan made his one day debut for Worcestershire in the Clydesdale Bank 40 match against the Unicorns at Kidderminster. The Unicorns are a team made up of Minor Counties players without a county contract. The match was an away match for Worcestershire even though it was played at Kidderminster. With Jack Manual playing for the England U19 team Alexei Kervezee opened the innings with Vikram Solanki.

Keith Parsons won the toss for the Unicorns and elected to field first. Unicorns made a good start taking early wickets to leave Worcestershire on 27-3 by the 5th over. A 4th wicket stand of 113 between Al-Hasan and Daryl Mitchell helped Worcestershire to recover.

Al-Hasan top scored with an innings of 72 before being bowled off an inside edge by ex-Glamorgan player Mike O’Shea, after an innings lasting 69 deliveries containing 10 boundaries. Mitchell also made 70 off 84 deliveries to help Worcestershire pass 200.

James Cameron was last man out with a career best 58 off 47 deliveries and Shaaiq Choudhry scored a quick fire 22 off 13 balls to help Worcestershire reach 277-7 in their 40 over allocation. Jonathan Miles took 3-49 in 7 overs as Worcestershire finished on probably a slightly below par score on a traditionally high scoring ground.

In reply Mike O’Shea scored a career best 90 to set up a successful run chase for the Unicorns. The reply got off to a good start with Jackson Thompson scoring 54 and ex-Worcestershire player Josh Knappett 28. Thompson scored quickly at the top of the innings with his half century came in 37 deliveries.

It was a 4th wicket stand of 115 between O’Shea and Keith Parsons that set up the victory for the home side. Parsons was eventually bowled for 47 off the bowling of Alan Richardson. O’Shea’s innings lasted 62 deliveries, containing 7 fours and 5 sixes.

Worcestershire were hampered slightly by the absence of Choudhry who was unable to bowl however the Unicorns paced their innings well and had wickets in hand at the end of the innings to help them increase the run rate at the required time.

The Unicorns reached their target with 2 balls to spare, helped by an unbeaten 25* by Neil Hancock off 14 balls at the end of the innings.

Unicorns (280-7) beat Worcestershire (277-7) by 3 wickets with 2 balls to spare.
