Newton Digs In To Score Determined Half Century On Seconds Debut

Worcestershire Academy all-rounder George Newton showed great application with the bat on his debut appearance for the Second X1 in the Championship clash with Lancashire Seconds at RGS Worcester.

Newton, one of two new members of the Academy intake for 2015-2016, dug in for nearly three and a half hours for an unbeaten 56 to help Worcestershire reach a respectable 253-9 after they had elected to bat.

He came in at 119-4 and produced a chanceless knock which has so far spanned 201 minutes and contained four boundaries.

Newton, who has opened the batting for Cheshire Under-17s and also bowls medium pacers, has just completed his first year at Shrewsbury School and has been under the watchful eye of Worcestershire satellite academy coach Paul Pridgeon.

Wicket-keeper Alex Milton provided the other substantial knock of the day with 53 off 134 balls with seven boundaries before the close after 103.4 overs at the fall of the ninth wicket.

Openers Will Fraine (4) and Josh Haynes (18) were caught behind while skipper Alex Hepburn (24) shouldered arms after making a breezy 24.

Nick Hammond (24) was trapped lbw before the main stand of the innings – 71 for the fifth wicket between Milton and Newton carried the total to 190.

A spate of wickets followed with leg spinner Matt Parkinson returning 5-67 including the wickets of Zen Malik (10) and Ben Twohig (0) who were released from England Under-19 duty to play.

But George Scrimshaw (13) made a useful contribution with the bat for the second day running in adding 37 with Newton before departing to the last ball of the day.
