Worcestershire CCC paceman Dillon Pennington struck in each of his first THREE overs for England Under-19s in the ICC World Cup quarter-final with Australia in Queenstown, New Zealand – but ended on the losing side.
The County’s Academy product produced a deadly spell to help reduce Australia to 28-4 after they had opted to bat and they were eventually dismissed for 127.
But then England collapsed from 47-0 to 96 all out despite 58 from Tom Banton with Aussie leg spinner Lloyd Pope finishing with 8-35 – the best ever bowling figures at an Under-19 World Cup.
Pennington returned to the side after being rested for the final group game with Canada and instantly wreaked havoc.
He shared the new ball and broke through with his second delivery as Jack Edwards (3) was trapped lbw.
Pennington made another breakthrough in his next over as Max Bryant (16) edged a short ball through to keeper Jack Davies.
He collected a third scalp as Param Uppal (0) nicked the final ball of his third over and Finlay Trenouth produced a superb catch away to his right at second slip.
Pennington’s first six over spell produced the excellent figures of 3-19 before he was given a breather.
He returned for a further two over spell, bowling the 24th and 26th overs, after which his analysis was 8-1-27-3.
Pennington, who also plays Birmingham League cricket for Shrewsbury, had played in the opening two group matches against Namibia and Bangladesh with his Worcestershire team-mate Adam Finch called into the side against Canada.
England started confidently in reply but wickets started to tumble after Pope’s introduction to the attack and Pennington was the last wicket to fall to the bowler.
