July 1981, and rioting and discontent ruled the streets of England. On the cricket pitch the England team were 1-0 down after two tests against the old enemy, Australia. Iconic all-rounder Ian Botham had resigned as English captain, hours before being pushed. In contrast opposing Captain, Kim Hughes, the Golden Boy of Australian sport, brilliant and eloquent, seemed to be a master of the universe.

With English cricket on the brink of collapse, bookmakers offered odds of 500-1 against an English win in the 3rd test. So then it seemed the only thing to look forward to that summer was the Royal wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Yet Botham would not lie down and rediscovered his cavalier flair in a series of remarkable, match-winning performances that defined him as “super human” and saw the Ashes returned to the home of cricket: Lord‘s England.

Packed with match action footage and interviews with the chief protagonists – including Sir Ian Botham, Mike Brearley OBE, Kim Hughes, Bob Willis MBE, David Gower OBE, Rod Marsh, legendary umpire “Dickie” Bird MBE and more – From The Ashes is set over one tempestuous month and explores the meaning of leadership and the importance of sporting victory to troubled nations.
