Rhodes Hails “terrific Win” And Coolness Shown Under Pressure

Steve Rhodes hailed a "terrific win" as Worcestershire Rapids overcame Leicestershire Foxes by six wickets in their opening home NatWest T20 Blast match of the season.

Rhodes was delighted at restricting the Foxes to 147-6 and then Daryl Mitchell (58), Ben Cox (30 not out) and Ross Whiteley (26 not out) saw the Rapids to victory in 17.4 overs.

Director of Cricket Rhodes said: "We played it quite cool under a little bit of pressure there especially Mitch and Coxy because there was a little period when they were probaby not quite getting the runs per over we required.

"But we always had the wickets in hand as well as the good strikers so we were feeling confident. It was a terrific win.

"We've bowled and fielded well in both games now and thankfully this time around we were good with the bat as well.

"I've got to take my hat off to Mitch and Coxy and at the end Ross Whiteley. The way he hits a cricket ball is a joy to watch.

"It's not so good when you are throwing balls at him and he is smacking them back over your head!

"He hits them with unbelievable velocity and the pace he hits them, he is a very exciting striker of the ball and that is one of the reasons we hold him back.

"Mitch had an excellent game. He went for only a few runs (13) and to do that in T20 cricket is excellent.

"I must admit I fancied him not to bowl that fourth over because more often than not you bowl three good ones and something happens with the fourth but he kept his confidence and bowled a lovely fourth over as well.

"He has had a great game and thoroughly deserved to be man of the match."

Rhodes added: "The target of 148, we were actually happy with that because they had a good start at 57-2 in six overs and got to the 100-4 in the 14th over and generally from there you can get to 160.

"For us to hold them back a little bit and make that total under 150, we were delighted.

"We have a very talented young group of players but to get some confidence out of that win will hold them in good stead for this competition.

"We showed in previous years in T20 cricket that we can beat some of the best sides and Leicestershire will be a dangerous team this year."

The Worcestershire victory song was heard in the dressing room after the game.

Rhodes said: "There has been some frustrations with some of the four-day form and there has been some disappointed lads in that dressing room.

"It's really nice to hear that song and hopefully it will spur them on for other things."
