Rhodes: Important To Add Extra Depth In Seam Bowling Department

Steve Rhodes says providing greater depth to Worcestershire's pace attack was the reason behind recruiting Matt Henry and Kyle Abbott as their overseas players for the 2016 campaign.

Worcestershire put the accent predominantly on spin in that department last summer via Sachitra Senanayake (five games) and Saeed Ajmal (eight matches) in the County Championship.

The County initially tried to sign players from other counties to add to their pace options for the forthcoming campaign.

But when that proved unfruitful, it was decided to recruit from abroad with Henry at New Road from early April to late June and Abott from early July until the end of the campaign.

Director Of Cricket Rhodes said: "When we looked at the end of the season at our squad, and this is not just me, the coaches, the captain, we had a few areas that possibly we need to improve.

"One of them was adding to our group of first team ready seam bowlers to give us more depth.

"We looked at some local (domestic) signings and we didn't quite get them.

"So, when it came down to deciding on an overseas player, we felt that was more of a priority than the other areas we probably needed to strengthen.

"Because we couldn't get a domestic bowler that is first team ready, we went down the overseas bowler route – and we will make sure we get by with the other areas as well."

Joe Leach, Jack Shantry and Charlie Morris bowled the brunt of the overs pace-wise last summer although Ed Barnard also showed his potential when breaking into the side.
