George Scrimshaw picked up three wickets on his return to action after injury with Worcestershire Seconds on the opening day of the four-day friendly with Surrey Seconds at Kidderminster.
Charlie Morris (2-60) and Andy Carter (3-44) did the early damage in reducing Surrey to 34-5 with the new ball.
Scrimshaw, who has been side-lined with back and rib injuries, came on second change and dismissed top scorer Calvin Harrison (86).
He enjoyed two other successes in finishing with 3-41 from eight overs.
Surrey eventually recovered to total 230 all out with spinner Ben Twohig returning from first team duty to secure the other two wickets.
Worcestershire also had to overcome a testing start thanks to skipper Ollie Westbury (77) and debutant Callum Lea (33 not out).
Morris and Carter, who is on a short term contract with the County, wreaked early havoc but Harrison and keeper Jake Dunford added 101 for the sixth wicket.
Surrey skipper Matt Dunn quickly removed George Rhodes and Josh Dell to leave the home side on 11-2.
But Westbury scored a good rate and his 93 ball knock contained one six and 13 fours before he was fourth out at 108.
Lea, who has impressed for the Academy, will look to build on his promising start tomorrow and so far he has faced 80 balls and hit four boundaries.
