Seconds Have To Settle For Share Of Spoils – And 11 Points – After Rain Has Final Say

Worcestershire Seconds had to settle for a draw after a rain-affected final day of their Second Eleven Championship match with Nottinghamshire Seconds at Notts Sport Club.

Worcestershire set their opponents a target of 373 in 90 overs and they were 241-4 when the elements had the final say.

The visitors pick up 11 points from the game and Nottinghamshire nine points.

Despite light rain before the start, play on the final day started on time with Worcestershire resuming on 240-5.

There were an eventful first few overs with Calvin Dickinson caught at gully in the first over for 13, Ben Twohig at long on in the second over for one and Ollie Westbury bowled in the third over for 111.

Worcestershire declared after four overs of the morning session on 265-8.

Ed Barnard, who picked up six wickets in the first innings, struck in the third over having opener Jake Libby caught at first slip by Ross Whiteley for two.

Rain after 8.4 overs for three quarters of an hour cut 12 overs from the day and Notts resumed on 32-1.

Only 3.3 more overs were possible before the rain came again and lunch was taken early on 38-2. When the rain finally abated and play got underway after lunch, a further six overs had been lost.

Anuj Dal started to chase the target with a boundary each over until Barnard removed both his middle and off stump in the seventh over after lunch.

Nottinghamshire scored 117 in the 29 overs between lunch and tea and so started the final session of the match needing 218 to win with seven wickets in hand.

A double change of bowler immediately after tea saw George Rhodes bowl Will Gidman for 45 with his first ball but guest player Chris Woakes from Nottinghamshire looked determined to knock the runs off in fine style.

It had been gloomy all day but the light worsened around 5 pm and the players were brought off for bad light.

Rain followed and it was decided there was little chance of more play, so the match ended in an honourable draw with Woakes stranded on 93.
