Seconds Launch Trophy Campaign With Win Over Local Rivals

Seconds Launch Trophy Campaign With Win Over Local Rivals

Worcestershire Seconds launched their 2017 Trophy campaign with a 13 run success over local rivals Warwickshire Seconds via the Duckworth-Lewis Method at Moseley.

Coach Kevin Sharp's side totalled 307 all out and then the home side, after being set a revised target of 221 in 37 overs, closed on 207-8.

The Seconds fielded a strong side including Tom Fell, who kept wicket after Joe Clarke pulled out through illness, Brett D'Oliveira and Jack Shantry of the 12 selected for the Specsavers County Championship clash with Northamptonshire.

But there were three sizeable contributions with the bat from players who have been regular members of the Seconds line-up so far this season in Ollie Westbury, Ross Whiteley and Alexei Kervezee.

Worcestershire elected to bat but were reduced to 34-3 with Aaron Thomason dismissing skipper George Rhodes, Fell and D'Oliveira cheaply.

Westbury and Whiteley repaired the damage via a fourth wicket partnership of 121 in 21 overs before the former fell for 82 made off 99 balls with one six and 11 fours.

Kervezee then joined forces with Whiteley and added 76 in 11 overs.

The former Derbyshire all-rounder was eventually dismissed for 90 from 83 deliveries with three sixes and 11 other boundaries.

Kervezee raced to 76 off only 61 balls with three sixes and five fours and added a further 64 with Alex Hepburn before the last five wickets fell for 12 runs.

Warwickshire openers Andy Umeed and Sam Hain featured in a partnership of 147 before D'Oliveira broke through by having the latter caught at point for 62 in the 29th over.

A break for rain followed almost immediately at the end of that over with Warwickshire 148-1.

When the players were able to return at 6.30pm, Warwickshire required a further 73 from 7.3 overs and Rhodes quickly picked up the key wicket of Umeed, leg before for 87.

The Bears lost a steady flow of wickets trying to reach their revised total. Charlie Morris picked up two wickets and there were two run outs.
