Experienced duo Jack Shantry and Charlie Morris both picked up four wickets on the opening day of Worcestershire Seconds four-day friendly with Hampshire Seconds at the Ageas Bowl nursery ground.

Shantry finished with 4-49 from 24 overs, removing one of the openers and then working his way through the middle order after the home side were put into bat.

Morris cleaned up the lower order – with all four of his victims caught behind by keeper Alex Milton – on his way to figures of 4-80 from 20.4 overs.

Hampshire’s total of 376 all out was built around opener Ian Holland who hit 159 off 182 balls with two sixes and 26 fours – a total of 116 in boundaries.

The Australian shared in two century partnerships, adding 139 for the second wicket with Tom Alsop (72 off 85 balls) and 118 with Asher Hart (76 off 119 deliveries).

Shantry and Morris shared the new ball and nine of the first 13 overs bowled were maidens.

Joe Weatherley was caught at first slip by George Rhodes in the seventh over off Shantry and then Holland survived a hard chance in the slips in the next over from Morris whilst on four.

In the next 20 overs, Hampshire scored a further 128 without losing a wicket as they lunched at 143-1 off 33 overs.

Shantry trapped Alsop lbw to the first ball after lunch and had Tom Scriven (3) caught at fourth slip by Josh Dell.

Spinner Rhodes bowled Calvin Dickinson (6) in the sixth over of the afternoon but Holland and Hart batted through the rest of the session to take Hampshire to 299-4 at tea.

Once again, the interval did the trick as Holland was caught at mid-wicket in the second over of the the final session from Zen Malik after adding  just one more run.

Zain Ul-Hassan and Malik bowled spin in tandem for 16 overs after tea and gave away just 35 runs.

Holland was fifth out at 302 and, after Morris and Shantry shared the second new ball, the last five wickets went down for just 29 runs in 7.5 overs.

Worcestershire were left with two overs batting which were safely negotiated by nightwatchman and skipper Morris and George Rhodes in reaching 7-0.
