Jack Shantry scored a stunning maiden first class century to help revive Worcestershire's hopes in the LV = County Championship clash with Surrey at New Road.
The left armer, who yesterday reached 50 Championship wickets in a season for the first time, reached three figures off just 86 balls with two sixes and 18 fours.
He shared in stands of 108 for the eighth wicket with Joe Leach (50) and 71 with Mitchell McClenaghan for the ninth wicket.
Worcestershire recovered from 171-7 to 350 all out to set Surrey a 217 target.
Mitchell McClenaghan made an early breakthrough when he trapped Rory Burns lbw for five – and also had Vikram Solanki dropped behind the wicket – as Surrey reached 30-1 off 14 overs by the close.
Shantry received a standing ovation all around New Road after reaching three figures with a leg glance for four off Surrey paceman Matthew Dunn.
It comfortably surpassed his previous highest score of 55 not out.
Shantry came to the wicket with Worcestershire just 37 runs ahead after Ben Cox was the seventh wicket to fall but he and Leach set about transforming their sides fortunes.
The pair reeled off boundary after boundary, some of them fortuitous and some of them from handsome strokes.
Shantry hit two fours and a six over third man in an over from Stuart Meaker and Leach lofted Gareth Batty for six over long on.
A single off Batty took Shantry to the third half century of his career from 37 balls – with 46 of his runs coming in boundaries.
Leach followed up his 70 in the first innings with another crucial contribution before he was lbw to Zafar Ansari in the third over after tea.
A six by Shantry over long on off Ansari brought up the 300 and he then straight drove Matthew Dunn for three fours.
McClenaghan played an outrageous scoop shot off Jade Dernbach which brought him a boundary.
Then came Shantry's magical moment with the leg glance off Dunn which took him to three figures.
He finished unbeaten on 101 after Dernbach wrapped up the innings by trapping McClenaghan lbw and bowling Charlie Morris (0).
Worcestershire resumed on 12-0 and Dernbach broke through for the visitors when skipper Daryl Mitchell (3) was bowled off the inside edge working the ball to leg.
Richard Oliver looked in good form and straight drove and pulled Dernbach for boundaries.
But after making 24 he aimed a pull shot at Dernbach and was caught down the leg side by wicket-keer Gary Wilson.
Moeen Ali twice cut Dunn for four and new batsman Tom Fell turned Stuart Meaker off his legs to the ropes.
Fell on nine was bowled by Batty through the gate to leave Worcestershire on 63-3 in the 22nd over.
Moeen swept Batty for successive sixes in an over costing 17 runs. He went to his half century with a four through mid wicket off Batty.
But in the next over Moeen swept at Batty and was adjudged lbw.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore twice cut Dernbach for four after the resumption but was then run out for 20.
Alexei Kervezee played Batty to Steven Davies at cover and Kohler-Cadmore could not regain his ground at the non-striker's end.
Dunn ended Kervezee's innings on 38 when he was adjudged lbw and then accounted for wicket-keeper Ben Cox (11) who after surviving two chances was caught on the square leg boundary by Dernbach.
But then came the Shantry, Leach and McClenaghan batting extravaganza.
